Passage just basically means you transferred the cells and diluted them to continue growth. Doubling is much more informative. You need the original seeding density and the final cell yield. That tells you how many doublings. A given number of passages could refer to many different amounts of doubling.

Good explanation. I would just add, depending on what cell line you have, whether immortalised or primary ("finite") cells, they each have different cell sizes and growth rates, which will impact how fast you will need to split a flask before they become confluent and occupy majority of the surface area. That's something you'll need to figure out when growing but if you're using a known cell line, I'm sure there's information online.
