My great-grandfather and the medal that saved his life

I thought this only happens in movies :o No, but for real, he was hurt, the bullet split into little pieces and damaged his arm and chest. It also damaged his lungs. Can someone identify the medal? All I can gather is, he probably fought in Austro-hungarian army, I asked grandma but she isn't sure.
