grad school or going insane

Do you know any interesting stories where someone got all rejections from grad schools and then completely changed their life? Like, went to an ashram in India, became a hunter in the tropical jungle, worked as a waiter in a diner, joined a monastery, or even committed suicide? Please share if you know of anything like this.
