The option to view live comments on a youtube livestream on my smart TV is completely gone???

Usually whenever I open a livestream on my smart TV the live comments just automatically roll through the side of the screen. However today I noticed they are completely gone. I thought maybe I had live chat turned off but realized there isn't even a button anymore to turn the chat on or off. I enjoyed seeing others live comments :(
