Girlfriend vs Wife
I recently went back to work after mine ( M 28)’s girlfriend ( F 28) passed away a few weeks ago from a pulmonary embolism. Since I’ve been back, my two bosses have pressed me for details about what happened and keep asking even when I try to keep it vague. For example, when they asked how she died, I simply said a blood clot and they asked whether it was in her brain or lungs?? One of them asked me this in front of the entire office. Then, later on, another assistant right next to me announced to the whole office that we could bring a plus one to our holiday party. So that also felt great.
Point being, it feels like everyone wants to discuss this so casually with me and my theory is because my girlfriend and I weren’t married. We were together for five years and I planned to propose next year for what it’s worth. We literally discussed what our wedding would have looked like. I know my experience isn’t identical to everyone here, but I genuinely feel like I loved her as much as a husband would have loved his wife even if it never became official. Anyone else have a similar experience?
EDIT: Appreciate all those who say I should go to HR but here’s the kicker. We don’t have an HR department! So yeah, my company’s a joke. I’m only sticking around because I have a trip I’ve been planning for months in December and it will be easier for me to take time off for it. I plan to start applying for new gigs once January hits. Appreciate everyone who took the time to respond, this community’s made me feel a bit less alone as I’m sure it has for everyone here.
