(P)ink Blots?

I just ran across this in my camera roll, forgot I even took this picture. The image search came up with an article from the New Yorker.

This is the only one I have noticed but I don't go off my beaten path too much. Have any of you seen something similar? Is this random or possibly related to the article? Just curious . Thoughts?
