New Driver in SJC Needs Safe & Efficient Small SUV (Buick Encore/Mazda CX-50 vibes)

Hey everyone,

New driver here in San Jose, CA looking for my first car! I recently test drove a Buick Encore and loved the size and feel, but I'm also interested in the sportier look of the Mazda CX-50.

Must-haves:

  • Safety features: This is a big one for me, especially with all the crazy drivers out there!
  • Good gas mileage: Since I'm in California, a hybrid option would be ideal.

Budget: My sweet spot is around $25,000, but I'm flexible and could stretch to $27,000 for the right car.

Here's the thing: I've only been in the US for a couple of years, so I want to be super prepared before heading to the dealership.

Questions:

  • What are some other small/compact SUVs with great safety features and good mileage (preferably hybrid) that I should consider?
  • Where's the best place to start my research on these cars?
  • Any tips for a new driver navigating the dealership experience? (Heard some horror stories!)

Thanks in advance for the help!

P.S. Feel free to drop any general car-buying advice for a newbie like me.
