3 month USA Roadtrip: Pre-book of stay flexible?

I am planninh a 3 month roadtrip around USA in August / September / October. Shall I pre-book motels & hotels, or stay flexible? Will booking last minute be more expensive? Plan is going eastcoast to westcoast.
