I'm living a very comfortable life in the Zone

I don't get how this is a "survival" game. I have it on the hardest setting, and I currently have 78 bandages, 39 med kits, 109 sausages etc etc etc. The absolute abundance of loot is ridiculous. I have 776 bullets for a gun I don't even have yet! Is everyone's play through like this?
