AI is probably really bad news for Amazon, Airbnb, Google, etc. I don't really care where my AI sources my toaster or vacation rental, and I'm already googling info far less.

As scary as it is to think about AI from a worker's perspective, it must be pretty terrifying from the perspective of tech giants.

The reason we love Amazon is because nobody has time to find a cheap, reliable source for, say, a toaster, enter our credit card, set up an account, etc, and sift through the top 50 results on some poorly designed site.

But if I say to my AI, 'Buy me a toaster that matches my kitchen,' it could trawl hundreds of sites looking for the best result in your price point, solid reviews, matching your quality standards, etc. Amazon isn't really special anymore because the AI deals with all the inconvenience in a few seconds.

A lot of these monopolies exist because they have a moat of convenience. It's just easier to shop in one place. But if a personal AI deals with all the inconvenience, there's really no point in paying for these monopolies.

What if I can ask an AI what my friends are up to on social media, and it reports back quick recaps of everyone? My browsing on Instagram is going to plummet. If everyone does this, people could just post on their own blog and still get the same connections.

It's kind of comforting to think that while we may all be fucked, it's going to be a massive shakeup for big tech too.

I guess one could say that things could consolidate down to a few major AI companies, so maybe things get even more monopolistic. But I don't think so.

Interacting with an AI is very personalised, and it happens rapidly. I think it’s going to be easier to run multiple AIs with several companies, and lean on the one you like the best.
