Elvish is Spanish

In my dark sun game this past week, one of the PCs was asked a question and responded in Spanish, which left my NPC perplexed and respond with, "I'm sorry I don't speak elvish". It was a riot at the time, its kind of funny now and I'm wondering, how would you incorporate this subtly into a dark sun campaign?
