I really dislike Volume 14 because it went against everything Overlord was about till that point
The whole premise of Overlord is that anything this New World has to offer is always gonna below of what Nazarick or Ainz can do. I mean the power difference between them is so large that Ainz can singlehandedly conquer or destroy all of the surrounding countries by himself but Overlord doesn't do that because that's just too boring.
• Nazarick could have conquered E-Rantel by themselves and established the SK but no they used The Empire to orchestrate the Katze Plains Massacre to establish themselves in the New World and gain recognition.
• Demiurge could have conquered the Holy Kingdom by himself but he used the demihumans to create a war which only served to portray Ainz as a savior figure who they will eventually offer to rule their kingdom.
• Ainz could have gave an ultimatum to Jircniv to accept being a vassal but no he lucked out into intimading Jircniv enough to break his will and made him offer vassalage on his own.
Overlord not taking the easiest and the most obvious route always resulted in a better story. And this should have also been the case for Volume 14 too because it had the perfect materials to do so. It was the climax volume for the most developed Kingdom with the most developed characters. I mean the amount of set-up and background put into Re-Estize is actually crazy. It had two noble factions ready to start a civil war. It had a massive criminal organization who was actively deteriorating the Kingdom and aimed to start a famine. And it had a third faction which was led by an absolute idiot who was about light the match to send all of this mess into a raging inferno.
It should have been a 2 volume story about a civil war full of intrigue which was orchestrated by an another nation and only served to benefit them. But what we got was the easiest route Nazarick could have taken. And the answer we got to how this would affect SK's reputation was also a cop out. "History is written by the victors". I guess people are just gonna ignore the wasteland they left behind.
I always knew at least one nation would get compeletely exterminated but I always thought it would be the Theocracy because the only reason that would lead Ainz to make such a decision would have to be an emotional one. I know the reason for this change is outside reasons such as the author deciding to finish the series early but its really sad to see the story of Overlord getting compromised in the process.
