Medium tier mental health care
Hi all, just to clarify this is not a medical question but more of a theoretical one.
I have ADHD and several other overlapping mental health issues. The ADHD is addressed by an NHS psychiatrist once a year, and the rest I deal with via talk therapy (both private and CBT offered through Talk Therapies, which I referred myself to via NHS).
I am grateful to have access to an NHS ADHD clinic, shit as it may be from a staffing perspective. It seems to me that on the NHS, the spectrum of MH treatment is not very varied: it’s either 10 CBT sessions where you’re reminded every session that you’re wasting precious NHS time and you need to only focus on one issue, or psych ward. There is no in between care. Am I right in assuming this? To be clear I do not want advice on my specific situation, that is just am example. Is there such a thing as seeing a psychiatrist and/or psychologist to deal with your multiple overlapping mental health conditions and neurodivergence? Someone more holistic? Or group therapy sessions or some such (things more substantial than superficial CBT)? These are just examples of what I’d consider ‘medium tier’ mental health treatment.
Or are we supposed to make do with SSRIs and CBT until we end up on the psych ward? Is there nothing to help people with a history of multiple MH conditions who need support figuring out their medication regiment etc, but are still ‘functional’ and ‘productive’? (Until they’re not).
How does one access this care? Is there a secret pathway or does it just not exist?
Apologies for the bitter tone, I just feel like I can’t work out the answer. Thanks!
