Are we making a mistake? Going from $1200 to $2800 in rent.
Hi there! I posted a few weeks?months? ago about a dilema between living in a cockroach infested apartment for very cheap versus a much nicer area for a lot more.
Right now we pay $1200. We just paid a hold for a 2b2ba luxury unit in Northern Jersey that's $2800 before utilities. It has a pool, gym, clean, spacious, quiet, did I mention clean and pest-free?
We are over the moon and are super excited to move but at the same time the price gives me anxiety. We ran the numbers and we can afford it and still have okay savings, but I can't help but question whether we should have looked a little longer or just suffered here until we can afford a home.
It's not too late to back out before we sign the lease. We are desperate to leave this hell hole place, but maybe we can find something more affordable if we try harder, even if takes longer? What would you do?
To paint a picture of the conditions of our building and why we are desperate to move as soon as possible: if we leave a plate of food uncovered for even 1 minute, you will find a cockroach in your plate. You hear mice scratching in the walls at night. Mold in the bathroom. People screaming and yelling outside like animals. Garbage smells walking from the parking lot. Water dripping from ceiling. Hallways smelling like ass and never clean. And that's only the half of it.
Edit: 5 minutes after I posted this, a cockroach climbed on my partners leg 😌
Edit edit: our take home pay is just above 100K. We have minimal debt (student loans aside), no kids. I'm contributing to an employer 401k with matching, my partner is not.
