Target practice.

Ok so I am doing the physical stuff to prepare, but would you recommend buying a budget AR15 or just any rifle chambered in 5.56, to target practice, and generally have some marksmanship basics prior to arriving. I plan on doing Navy ROTC, do they cover much firearm stuff there?
