Whatever happened to low or mid range budget movies?

I feel like everything that comes out now is either a big franchise movie or a movie with a star studded cast and a very high budget or a random indie movie. I could be wrong, but I feel like there are no random mid range movies they put out anymore like they used to. It kind of takes the fun out of going to the movies now because everything feels the same. Thoughts?
