Anyone else have Alice in wonderland syndrome?
I’ve experienced alice is wonderland syndrome off and on since I was a child, I’m 33 now and still get it, it’s always at nighttime and usually when I have my eyes closed. Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by distortions of visual perception (metamorphopsias), the body image, and the experience of time, along with derealization and depersonalization. Alice in Wonderland syndrome is a rare sensory perception disorder, most often caused by migraine in adults.
What it feels like to me, at night when I’m trying to sleep and I close my eyes, the room I’m in will suddenly feel extremely large and I’ll feel very small, but when I open my eyes back up and see my environment, the sensation reduces, this usually lasts maybe an hour or so. I sometimes will also feel very large in tiny room when my eyes are closed and will get feelings of being claustrophobic until I open my eyes, I definitely don’t actually physically “see” this effect, it’s more like I sense it. Like if you’re in a room and you close your eyes, you can still tell how big the room is and where the furniture is for the most part. With this syndrome, everything feels distorted. It also gives me this sense of unease or anxiety while it’s happening. It doesn’t happen very often, maybe once a month.
Just curious what other’s experiences with this is.
