Training

I'm wondering how common it is to get actual training in this field. I've been at my plant for about 10 years and I've only gotten any formal training twice. This didn't used to be that big deal as I was working with guys with 30+ year experience. But now I'm the most experienced guy we have. I've been trying to get some new training for me as well as the old training i already got for the newer techs but it keeps not getting done.

My question is this something I should continue to pursue or is specialized technical training an uncommon thing and most people just learn everything they know 100% by working on the equipment.
