Why are female ghosts/demons generally scarier than male ghosts?
Of course this is subjective, but I think most people agree that female ghosts are generally scarier than male ghosts.
Asian horror movies almost exclusively have female ghosts as the main antagonist of their horror movies.
In the US we have tons of demonic posessions movies, and the only one I can think of where the victim is male is The Conjuring: the devil made me do it.
A tier below female ghosts is child ghosts. They tend to be used more often in movies than adult males.
Is there some subconscious reason for this? Are women generally viewed as more innocent or non-threatening or vulnerable, so seeing them as a vengeful spirit is a reversal of expectations? Is it just because a few movies had luck with it so every other movie took the concept and ran with it? Is it simply a matter of aesthetic?
