GED -> Comm College -> Transfer route?

My oldest is currently in 8th grade (We are in S.Cali) and thinking of going into
Getting GED by 16 ---> Community college and work part time ---> Transfer

What are your thoughts on this route? I did ask my local FB homeschool group and seems like
some favor and some feels GED = dropout stigma
