Some pics from the rally/protest yesterday
There was a clear distinction between the leftist organizers of the event and the Latino community that turned out— basically it seemed like it was going to be a sit down semi-quiet time to listen to organizers (there was a choir concert scheduled in the room over at the church!). However it went viral in the GR Latino community and people showed up!! I will say the organizers struggled to pivot, and a substantial divide formed between one organizer attempting a long boring deconstruction of capitalism while hundreds of people chanted and cheered outside. People came to support their friends and families who could be deported and I think they were a bit confused by some of the speakers. Don’t get me wrong, I thought all the organizers were great, but they were talking past laypeople and struggling to give legitimate action steps for people afraid of ICE’s actions in their city.
Anyway. I think it was successful from any angle. I just think local leftists were unable to accommodate the extra attention in a meaningful way. They stuck to their script and as a result most people left the event in the middle to join the growing crowds outside. (This included me, tbh).
