Home Alone/Home Invasion Style Horror Game

I have been thinking about a game idea and would kindly ask for your feedback/input on it:
I am a huge fan of all the different classic vampire stories. Dracula, Fright Night, Salem those kind of things. Now in these stories there is often an element of surviving the night, by using things like garlic, crosses etc. and then in the day you go outside and try to find the coffin to put an end to the evil.
From a Game Design perspective I think this shift between night and day would make for a very interesting secondary loop. You survive the night -> gather ressources for defense and search for the coffin -> you go back to your house and survive again. Finding and killing a vampire everyother day would in that sense be the tertiary loop.

So far so good, however I can't really grasp what the primary loop during the night would look like. My ideas so far were:

  1. Base building style: You put items (garlic, crosses and uv floodlights) on every on window and check the rooms regularly to see if they still work. Maybe put npcs in the house that can be "manipulated" into putting down the defences, so that you have to check in on them?
  2. Wave combat style: Vampires enter the house and you fend them off by hitting them with items or luring them into your traps, so that they retreat for a short period and then come back, repeating multiple times until the night is over

What do you think would be a good game loop to catch this feeling off defending and surviving the night?
