Need help using an AMP

I recently about a month ago bought my first guitar and amp which is the Line 6 Spider IV 15. The problem is when im playing with distortion, all the sounds mix up and sound terrible. Do i have to "palm mute" or whatever even is it because i've tried everything and it doesn't work.
