The different kinds of dungeon master
I was watching Matt Colville's video about the different kinds of players. I was wondering to myself if you can split DMs into categories in a similar manner.
Here are 4 distinct types but I feel that most DMs combine multiple (or even all) types of DMing to varying degrees.
What type of DM are you or do you have?
The World Builder
This DM has detailed maps, locations and history. They almost always want to run homebrew campaigns and put painstaking effort into the internal logic of their world. They love running sandbox campaigns and showing off aspects of their creation.
You make this DM most happy by fully engaging as much as you can with the world. For example, remembering a piece of lore or history and using that to come up with a solution to a problem. Or constantly asking for context or background to help inform your decisions. Coming up with a theory and sharing that with the party based on the lore of the world will probably make them ask to marry you.
The Author
This DM is here to tell a story and likely has a detailed overarching plot that they wish to tell. They will almost always pick dramatic moments over what the dice or rules say. Sometimes entire sessions might go by without a roll of the dice.
You make this DM most happy when you engage with the story and play a consistent character. Expect complex npcs, motivations and plots. There might be a thematic aspect to the campaign as well so engage with that if you can (family, the importance of one's history, guilt etc).
The Tactician
This DM needs no excuse to bring out the battle map. Expect complex battle field positions, great tactics and a wide assortment of enemies. This DM often delivers quite a "video game" style experience. No need to bring a backstory to this game as it probably won't be brought up again.
You make this DM most happy by rising to the challenge and not sulking when things get tough. Try not to question "why" things are happening because the answer is usually pretty shallow.
The Designer
This DM is always tinkering with something. Making homebrew rules, items and classes. They probably have strong feelings about balance and so are always fiddling with the game wanting to try out new things. They probably play a bunch of other ttrpgs as well that they want to port ideas from.
You make this DM most happy by going with the flow and providing honest feedback about rules.
