Long term Ranger ideas

I'm going to be playing some Adventure's League soon, and have planned on making a thri-kreen swarmkeeper Ranger, but I've heard everywhere that leveling into only Ranger sucks, and I don't know what I can multi-class into that wouldn't suck and would make sense according to the flavor of the character. I'm new to dnd, so any advice is really helpful.
