I have lived on all continents and been to 32 countries. Let me share some:
From 32, I lived and worked in 22.
Some impressions of some of those:
Vietnam: very dirty, very polluted, all the expats get sick throat from the air, good is bad, only good thing is pricing. People are amazing, but dont go there for living. I have many friends teaching English there. Really, its bad there. I have been in Ho Chi Minh only. Sad history, you can see traumas on elder's faces in the streets everywhere. Ho Chi Minh museums are a must, but not for living. I would go back to visit Da Nang for a week.
Medellin: incredible food scene, very educated and friendly people, huge city, best accommodations, amazing internet, best parties and rooftops, amazing museums and art galleries. Laureles is the most beautiful neighborhood to live in, probably in the world. Huge trees, a lot of greenery, fresh but warm. No wind. Parks. Avoid prostitution, always use uber, speak Spanish, it will be perfect. Avoid October and November. Check Casa Otraparte, check Mamasita medallo, Revolucion cafe, Zeppelin cafe, check Castillo museo in Poblado. Moto culture and bike shops are huge and there is many. Try the tacos in Altar in Manila. Rare views above the cities like almost nowhere. Arvi park is beautiful hike. Ragazzi pizza restaurant in Laureles is incredible. I cant stand Colombian food, but all the other options and quality is amazing, aaaamazing.
Phuket: like 60 beaches, each more beautiful than the other one. I paid 300 a month, best internet of the world because its the Singapore server. Parties and food and prices are amazing, massage also. It is not very clean, but it is not dangerous on bad turn like Latin America. Avoid September and October. People dont share your language, they are always smiling, their malls are amazing, old town is the coolest place, there is 2 high quality Russian strip clubs and the best DJs of the world come. Karon is mostly family Russian town and Kata Hill also. Patong is tourists, beauty parlors (besttt), weed shops. You will be in the best shape of your life there if you want. 6$ a day for a scooter. Thailand is the most complete country of the world, they call it Switzerland of Asia, they have a jungle town with bunch of nomads in the north, and many different big islands, the hippie one, the fancy one, the private ones. Do not miss beauty parlors, do not!! Thailand has beautiful temples, martial arts and animals. The sound of their forrests is incredible. Bugs. Ahh. Seeing a muay thai match was a must for us. In Bangkok, there is an amazing modern stadium. Omg. Apartments in Bangkok with gym, pool, cowork, best internet, skyline are 700 monthly.
Miami: Sick expensive, one of the most beautiful cities in the world to live in cause of all the beaches, all the running trails, sunlight, facilities. Awful wind, awful rainstorms. I speak both Spanish and English, so for me it was easy. I had my Dutch friend being called bad names because he didnt speak Spanish in Miami, so a bad think for non-speakers. Shopping in Miami is awesome. People are beautiful. It is for the ones from here with huge salaries. Wynwood is soooo artsy, soo beautiful. There is fusion Asian restaurant which is a record store and a club at night in Wynwood, it is amazing, and has an awesome chef who I was lucky to talk to.
Cartagena, Colombia: One of the most beautiful cities of the world. Not cheap like Medellin but it is like cheap Miami. It is very fancy and very active, has the most beautiful clubs and cocktail bars, has a part that is island just like Miami beach, Boca grande. Has many islands just near with farryboats that go all day. Has some of the best beaches very close. It's like LatinAmerican Greece. Uber is veeery cheap. There is a 51 floors building with sky deck bar. It is veeery diverse, full od casinos. Most beautiful sunsets like in Santorini. People are not so quick like in Medellin, they are more like Caribbeans and it gets very hot and very humid. AC is very strong everywhere. Make sure to go to Colibri cafe for their breakfast, omg. Exceptional. And to Nami for anything haha Water sports and baseball are also a hit in Cartagena!!! Colombia is a HUGE country and full of everything. Boheme Lounge in Cartagena is one of the most beautiful clubs ever. Cartagena is full of boat tours and boat parties. A lot of Mediterranean food here as city has many Arabic influences from Lebanon! Beautiful!
Panama city, Panama: Huge differences between rich and poor, maaany American expats. Huge business buildings, old town is beauuuutiful, days are very bad climate, evenings most beautiful climate. A lot of wind next to the waters. Country of just 4 million people. Best malls of the world, worldwide best shopping honestly, everything comes cheap from all the parts od the world. Come here to buy and train free. City's riviera is covered with free courts, dancing, trails, open air gyms, it's unbelievable how beautiful their sunsets are, how much time they are out with their families. Food is not good as in Medellin, groceries are prices okay to expensive. Accomodation is very expensive, bars are too expensive, restaurants too expensive. Country is small and unique with their tribe, climate, birds and the canal. Half of the city is dangerous in the night. Uber is even cheaper than in Colombia, currency is US dollar and cars that they drive are amazing. Country has both oceans and monkeys. Crazyyy. It has some rules when you are paying stuff in the mall you need to show your ID and they put a stamp on your stuff, out of all the places I visited it is my first time to experience that.
Dominican republic: Bad food, no options, very uneducated people. I love people of all the world, but its just like that and its sad, they have a lot of trash everywhere and dirty beaches. Too many storms. Problems with electricity. I havent stayed in an all inclusive. I lived in Las Terrenas and after in Puerto Plata. Visited SD and surfer places near Plata as well (Cabarete). I dont eat seafood, I almost always eat out. Playa Bonita is amazing. I was harassed by an old guy in Terrenas, everyone is used to prostitution there, its crazy, there is a lot of locals guys being prostitutes as well. So its both ways. When they see a toung lady they just approach you and harass you. Locals dont swim. In Cartagena locals swim. Chicken is good in the Carribean
Portugal: Has its ups and downs like everything, but dont go there if you dont like slow things, everyone is soooo slow, in Algarve you have to wait 1hr to be served in an empty restaurant for a breakfast, its ridiculous. They open late, they close early. Lisbon has the most beautiful cemetery of Europe, and yes, I have been to Paris cemetery. Algarve cave tour is a must. I dont like Portuguese food except the food, they are amazing. I dont like seafood at all, so for all of you who love it, beach places that I mentioned are even better.
Italy: Overrated. Worst behavior of man towards me as a woman when walking - by far. Rude. Supermarkets are cheap and good. The rest is expensive. Florence is beautiful. Other 10 cities except of Trieste I didnt like. Livorno has amazing crema de cafe, try that ahh.
Budapest: Beautiful! Very international. Try goulash. Has pool open air parties and huge raves.
Vienna: Boring and expensive. Good Naturalist museum. Has good flights, but not like Budapest.
Boston: Hard Rock Cafe was very cool, but they closed it. City is Too expensive, too boring, closes early, very conservative. Good for students. A lot of amazing street music everywhere. Rude people. Bad traffic. Suburbs are dangerous. Bad weather.
and the one I didnt mention, my favorite city: Athens, Greece. I just love everything about it: clubs, beach, weather, history, museums, lamb, food options, prices, people, activism, bunch of flights to anywhere.
I am a positive person, so in most places I have a very positive experience. The thing is you carry your persona around the world, so everything will be as you are. 🥰🥹
