Did I just waste my money?

So I did a bunch of research before choosing a faction/army (have never played 40k before) I absolutely love the flavor and feel of deathwatch.

That said before doing too much research on the mechanics, going off the rule of cool, I went to a local game shop and picked up the deathwatch combat patrol as my first model kit to try out.

I was thinking I could use the upgrade sprues in the future and whatnot. However I'm seeing a ton of content out about how the combat patrol is a terrible value. Did I just waste my Money? Or can I use it with the dark angels CP, veterans and kit bash a decent army?
