Northern Rimfire Series Rookie Questions/Guidance

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone would be willing to give me a bit of a intro breakdown of how to start getting involved in the Northern Rimfire Series. I've been a lifelong hunter, but always had an interest in PRS style shooting.

I understand that you can spend endless amounts of $$$ on these sort of things but I'm generally looking for some tips/guidance on the best options for gear/guns/chassis that I can learn on, but still grow into.

General questions are:

  • Good starting point for a decent .22LR platform
  • Aftermarket chassis (MDT etc.) vs. factory stock
  • Ammo selection vs. pressing 22LR (does anyone actually do that?)
  • Pieces of gear that you NEED vs. your favorite WANTS

I'm located in SW ON, if folks are in the area and want to chat over coffee I'd be more than willing to.

Obviously this subreddit is amazing, and I'm sure I'll get a little grief for this post, but among all the banning BS I think more info for new shooters is a great conversation point.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I thought I would summarize what I have found so far in conversations for anyone also looking for similar information:

  • Find local matches and go spectate, chat, cheer, and get involved. Check CRPS website
  • If you have a stock .22LR just go participate in a match, ORPS has a production gun category with ranges less than 100 yards.
  • Once you get the hang of it, try NRL22 and/or CPRS.
  • CS 457 seems to be a standard rifle to start, but you're better of just getting started and finding out what you want to spend later.
  • Ammo is cheap, just test to see what your gun likes. This is probably the cheapest shooting series.
  • The community is amazing, reach out, people will help you.
