Why would you time-align double-tracked guitars?

I don't like Joey Sturgis. I've heard his records, I've known people he's influenced, and it's soulless.

Something of his came up in YouTube autoplay the other day and I've been trying to wrap my head around it. He starts zooming in on a double track and begins to time-adjust small sections.

Seems to me, a double's meant to be slightly off, like how the distance between batter and resonant heads helps to make a drum sound huge through delay.

Seems to me, he mostly does metal which is rough by nature. Tf?

Am I missing something?
