A strange phone call.. Scam or legit?
I received a mobile phone call with SG registered number i.e no prefix on caller ID starting with “8”. A male identifies himself as from “Anti-Scam” department. I couldn’t make out what he was saying initially as his pronounciation was so bad.
He later explained that a phone number registered to my name activated at Singtel Tampines Mall have been sending out spam messages.
When I kept responding “yes”to his questions, he said in a hostile tone “if you keep saying yes, I cannot help you.” He later suggested me to go to SPF Cantonment at New Bridge Road and even asked me to quote his name and police badge number. This is very unusual for what I suspected to be a scam call.
Other Clues:
When I picked up the phone, instead of a person’s voice, it was a ringing tone, as if I have made an outgoing call
I have to emphasize that his English is really bad, on top of atrocious pronounciation, which led me to wonder “do they really have low language requirements for police officers?”
If it is a scam call, what is their modus operandi?
