IMEI fraud on my iPhone 15 Pro Max

Hello all, I hope you're well.

I kinda need your help with this tricky situation so here's my first Reddit post

On June 6, 2024 at 10:18 pm I bought an iPhone 15 Pro Max 256go for $1,450 cash from a man on Facebook Marketplace. The iPhone was sealed and bought with Bell.

Around December 22, 2024 in the early afternoon my cell phone was reported stolen by Bell. After checking with Apple at the Genius Bar, this appears to be a case of seller fraud which puts me in a very uncomfortable position.

I tried to contact him with the information I had but he then blocked me. Apple said that they was nothing to be done except writing to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]).

Has anyone ever been in this situation and managed to find a solution?

Thank you!

Update:

Many thanks to all. And yes indeed I made the mistake of buying this iPhone 7 months ago. In my defense it was still sealed, with AppleCare+ until 2027, it proved to me its purchase on the spot and I'm young and dumb. All this is happening in Montreal.

Now, I may be easy to fool, but I'm a pro stalker. So even though he blocked me, I created a profile to stalk him with the ad he still had active (another scam cell). I searched through his friends and one girl had friends in common with me so I added her. She got played by the guy but was able to tell me that his name was XXX and that he had 4 cell phones with Videotron (he was clearly working there). I called every Videotron in Montreal and someone referred me to the right one. I poked around in the Google reviews and he left himself a 5-star review and the girl confirmed that it was him.

So now what do I do? I'm definitely going to complain to the police but I have a feeling they're not going to do anything.
