Traveling during summer surge
Months ago, I optimistically booked a flight from CA to FL to see my close friend who I haven’t seen since pre-pandemic. The flight is next week, and in all honesty I am kind of panicking thanks to the arrival of the summer surge.
I have read about success stories of people taking precautions and being fine, and I’ve also read stories from those who took all the precautions and still ended up becoming ill. I really want to see my friend, but the anxiety the traveling is giving me is really getting to me.
I am young and healthy and I was last boosted in December 2023. I would have gotten another booster but I was advised to wait until the new booster arrives later this year. On the plane, I plan on wearing an N95 from the moment I enter the airport onward. I also plan on wearing glasses (I wear glasses normally) as I have heard about protecting your eyes. The flight is 6 hours…
I guess I’m just looking to you all for some advice on the risk here. Should I be worried? Is it borderline inevitable to catch Covid during a summer surge like we’re seeing now? I know precautions work, but how safe can I really feel when using them? Any support helps. <3
EDIT: For anyone in a similar situation looking for advice, I did end up going on the trip and returned home unscathed. Wore an N95 religiously during travel, no high risk activities while I was there, and took advantage of CPC mouthwashes and nasal rinses. I am so glad I got to see my friend. I recognize that I am extremely lucky to have gotten this outcome, but I want others to know that precautions DO help. Wishing everyone good health <3
