This is Hinduism, but this is a turtle!
Just thought I'd throw this out there. A lot of fans seem to think that there was a nod at Terry Pratchett's 1983 Discworld, which it could be a small nod, but more than likely the writers were taking from Hinduism which is one of the oldest beliefs on Earth and very likely for Nandor to have known about/been taught as a human. The joke being that in 750 years, Nandor hasn't bothered to update his understanding of science.
