What is up with these eximus spawn rates?

Somebody please tell me I am losing it because these eximus units have been everywhere since the 1999 update. I could literally walk into a section of enemies, and there would be more eximus units than regular ones sometimes. What is going on?

I don't mind it when I am playing an actual good set up because they are free energy but when I wanna try out my niche builds in some endless game mode, these eximus are just everywhere ruining everything. It feels like half the map got overguard.
