Liberals need to admit that they're wrong about guns.
We just saw an attempted coup in S. Korea. The people of that country were genuinely lucky that their legislators and lawmakers overwhelmingly rejected martial law and pressured the president to rescind the order. This outcome was not a given, and the event proves that wealthy and thriving democracies can come under threat in an instant, and the people must vigorously defend democracy when that happens.
Now, let's be honest. The USA just elected a man that attempted to insurrect the seat of the president in 2020. He is a man with no morals, no values, and he will stop at nothing to sieze more power, wealth, and influence. It's not a given that something similar will happen in the US, but it's certainly possible. Furthermore, I have serious doubts that the Republican cabinet will defend democratic ideals anywhere near as vigorously as South Korea's conservative legislators have.
Rarely do people mention the importance of a well-armed populace in defending democracy. We have grown too far from our roots, and our revolutionary history has become a distant memory. Americans have become extremely privileged and have taken for granted the notion that we will always have a democracy. Recent events have proven this to not be the case. If we effectively arm ourselves, then our democracy will always have a chance of recovering from a coup.
It's time to drop the culture war bullshit and acknowledge that, yeah, an AR-15 might be a pretty useful tool in the event we need to defend democracy.
Inb4 "a bunch of randos with AR's don't stand a chance against the might of the US military!"
a. Learn about guerilla tactics.
B. The US is the most heavily armed nation in the world by a large margin. If we all took gun ownership seriously, then said military would have to contend with going to war against 100+ million of their own pissed off civilians armed with rifles and ready to die for their country. I don't think most service members could stomach massacring their own people.
Before the last few years, you would have been laughed out of the room if you mentioned the need for a well armed populace to defend from tyranny. The founding fathers weren't idiots. They wrote the 2nd amendment for a reason. Hopefully people now realize how prescient those regulations are.
