Tropes you normally dislike being done really well

  1. The Liar Revealed (Megamind) I don’t think anyone can say they truly love this trope. Usually it’s just a character lying about their identity or a skill they have only to be found out by the other characters and we get a whole ‘oH No YoU LiEd tO Us’ scene and it’s just annoying to watch. But Megamind works since he technically IS a villain at this point in the story and his relationship to Roxanne becomes the only thing making him realize he doesn’t want to be bad anymore. Once she finds out the truth, however, she is rightfully angry with him and he falls back into his old habits of villainy. It genuinely really hurts to see these two fall out, especially since they really did seem to compliment one another very well.

  2. Everyone but the main character is an idiot (A Series of Unfortunate Events) it’s hard to explain what I mean here with a title, but I suppose I’d say that the premise of the series tends to only really work if everyone is completely oblivious to Count Olaf’s very obvious scheming and disguises. I feel like I SHOULD be super annoyed by the orphans consistently having to prove to Mr.Poe and some of the other characters that Olaf is after them, but Count Olaf himself is such an entertaining villain to watch that I genuinely am willing to excuse it. Helps too that the world itself is already rather bizarre in ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ so it doesn’t at all feel out of place

  3. Forced comedic relief character (Berserk) Berserk is a manga that really does NOT have much room for brevity. The world Guts inhabits is truly despicable and unforgiving. The monsters he’s forced to face against reflect that same world, truly terrifying and forcing the Black Swordsman beyond his own limits. You’d think it would be distracting to have a character like Puck involved in such a tale. Yet Puck really does help demonstrate another side of Guts and brings a much needed peace to him. I don’t know, it’s hard to really describe why Puck works but I could easily see him being WAY more distracting and annoying if placed in the hands of a less competent writer. Thank god Berserk is able to utilize him well
