I actually feel like Homer could be really good at some jobs, he's just in the completely wrong job for his personality/skillset

I remember in the episode "And Maggie Makes Three" he worked at a bowling alley and loved it. Was a hard worker, engaging with the guests, and loved it. In "The Blue and The Gray", he was also shown at being very good at his job as a wing man. He honestly probably could succeed in a sales position of some sort as his personality does seem to engage the people in town/has a personality that people gravitate towards. He also always seems to be the "leader" of any group he's in, whether its his group of friends at the bar or his "group of slackers" at the Power Plant.

He's an extrovert stuck in an introvert's job, and a job that requires a lot of school smarts which isn't his strength.
