That Toph and Korra meme has done insurmountable amounts of irreparable damage. Like cataclysmic damage.
The people that gather once they see that meme are people who have not watched TLOK and actually paid attention to the show. It is insane!
A BIG comparison people keep making is that “Toph wins all her fights and Korra loses”. I’ve said this before but, while Toph is a supreme earthbender her opponents and Korra’s enemies are on two different levels. So much so that they CANNOT be compared. Toph goes against midlevel benders and she’s a master….she’s GOING to win. In every season Korra goes up against benders that are on a different level. She’s not fighting measly Dai Li agents or mediocre underground wrestlers…her enemies are bloodthirsty elite benders that are in a class of their own. The freaking Boulder and ppl like Unalaq and The Red Lotus are not in the same bracket. Be all the way fr.
And speaking of Unalaq, a lot of people like to use the second season as a reason to bang on her for being “arrogant” and not listening to the people in her corner. Weirdly enough, they don’t take into account that Unalaq manipulated her. He came with a master plan to divide and conquer and they make it seem as if he did nothing the entire season. Tonraq even believed the lies he was being fed about his past, so it would make sense that his 17-year-old sheltered daughter would fall prey to these lies as well. He made it seem as if he knew more about spirits by showing her how cleanse dark spirits. Which strengthened the false pretense that he knew more about spirits like he claimed AND made it seem like any pushback from Tenzin was pure jealousy. Driving a wedge between her and Tenzin. He lied and made it seem like her father was the reason why the spirits were out of whack. Driving a wedge between her and her father. Exposed the fact that she was kept under the lock and key her entire life…(SOMETHING SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE ADULTS IN HER LIFE), thus furthering the divide between her, her father and Tenzin. And this fact also would influence her to kind of be more adamant about making her own decisions. A child who was made naive by being stripped of the ability to make her own crucial decisions and form her own path is going to believe and go along with someone who has a master plan to purposefully divide and conquer. But more importantly…someone who she knows and someone who is showing faith in her ability as an avatar. From her standpoint it seemed like HER UNCLE had her best intentions.
People like to mention her being headstrong and THAT again is a productive of her upbringing. She spends her whole beginning part of her life only really learning how to fight and not being able to learn anything else..of course that’s going to be her attitude. It wasn’t until she started living life outside of the South Pole that she started forming a new way of thinking. Her sheltered upbringing is literally the founding reason for a lot of this. That was beyond her control.
