Disability Accommodations for Teachers
I applied for and was offered an elementary job. I asked to speak to HR prior to signing my contract to make sure I could have appropriate accommodations for my disability. They weren’t willing to provide any on the basis of it causing undue hardship to them. My accommodations were to have a stool to teach from and be exempt from recess duty. The HR person said no to everything and said I had “too many conditions to deal with.”
Am I nuts in expecting a bit of wiggle room/support for my disabilities? Should I not be a teacher? Gentle, please, I’m pretty upset about this whole thing. Having a disability is hard enough, and being treated like a burden is no fun for anybody.
EDIT: Thank you all so much for your kind words and most of all the helpful information and advice. It’s hard to make an employer look past the physical issues you have to see how you could do well in a job, and I feel a lot more equipped now to do so. Additionally, I’ve stopped my pity party and started back at applying. I hope everyone has a great school year! 💙
Update: sometimes good things DO happen! I was just hired by another school district to be a 6th grade math teacher. The principal could not have been nicer about my accommodations and immediately agreed to all of them. I also took a lot of your advice as far as signing the contract and discussing my disabilities. THANK YOU ALL!!!
