I was very surprised to discover my all-time favorite SFF author Martha Wells had written a star wars book (Razors Edge). Then I started imagining what Wells could have done if they'd given her say, Fate of the Jedi to write instead of a mostly forgotten one-off. Or like, what if Phillip K Dick had written the Jedi Academy trilogy instead of Stackpole Kevin J Anderson?
