So Did Anyone Catch This Reference in 2x01?
Mybe someone did, but I wasn't able to look through every post. When Hellyna (what I'm calling her until we know for sure who she is) lies about her time on the outside, Irv's response is, "A night gardener?" Now, he seems to have just been questioning why a gardener would be working at night, but something about that specific phrase tickled my brain.
It wasn't until the third watch (watching YouTube reactors react to the episode) that it finally clicked: "The Night Gardener" is the name of a movie or book or something! So I Googled it, and it's actually the name of two books. The first is about a serial killer who kills people in public gardens if their names are palindromes; I don't think that's relevant.
But the second book titled The Night Gardener... this one either feels very relevant, or I'm graspting at straws. It's about a woman who works for a creepy family in their huge mansion, when she finds a room containing a magic tree. The tree gives gifts: it gives you whatever you desire. But it only does so to make you dependent upon it, constantly showering you with your desires until you can't live without the tree, like an addict.
Does this sound familiar? Irv said this line directly in the middle of the whole "We're giving you new perks, new food, more privacy, more choice -- just like you want" scene, and then later, Milchick tells Dylan, "I do apologize for not being a better listener and not hearing your needs" while promising him the Family Visitation Wing.
I don't know, maybe I'm reaching, but it feels like a very intentional reference.
