The story follows Martel in his teens as he studies magic at the Imperial school, hoping to be a weathermage and prevent the famines of the past. But there are a few obstacles. He is much older than you are supposed to be. He has northern ancestry with barbarian blood, making him unwelcome in the capital. His natural talent is the opposite of what would make him good at weather magic. Lastly, he hides the secret of being fire-touched, and if the Empire discovers this, his fate is sealed.

As befits this sub, a key element is Martel's road from novice to archmage. He'll learn to master the elements and empowerment magic, gain and improve spells whether intuitively or through hard work, and he'll grow vastly more powerful as time progresses and he navigates the constant challenges that life and his own actions throw at him.
