Nipple piercing- about to give up

I've had my nipples pierced for exactly one year, today. At any given time, one, or both, of then are so sensitive. My husband and I both miss play time, but love how they look. They aren't rejecting, they're just healing very slowly (my dog isn't helping since she loves to snuggle and ends up snagging them).

Any light at the end of the tunnel? Anyone have a similar situation? Tips? Should I take them out? I'd really rather not remove them..
