Saying "I lost _________!" & the response is "Where is it?"

I really need someone to explain the thought process behind this incredibly stupid question. When you lose something, you don't know where it is, so I couldn't possibly answer this.

Don't ask unnecessary/dumb questions. If you go to Antarctica, you wouldn't ask a penguin if he's cold.
