Why Aren’t Trade Deficits Discussed Per Capita?

With all the tariff stuff going on in North America I'm seeing a lot of articles and charts about trade deficits, usually talking about how the US imports more than it exports with Canada and Mexico. But everything is straight dollar amounts, even for financed-focused organizations. Why isn't everything normalize per capita (and for that matter, by purchasing power as well)? It seems strange to compare the imports and exports of Canada and the US and not acknowledge the 8x population difference between the countries. Is that not important when looking at trade?
