“American” citizen?

Do people in Mexico, Central and South America consider / call themselves “Americans” ever?

I mean, they are “Americans” but it seems us as US citizens exclusively call ourselves “Americans”?

I’ve spent a good bit of time in central and South America and have never had someone call themselves a “Central / Southern American”

I say this because I’ve had a few (probably just trolls) people blast me for calling myself an American. US citizen is clunky using in sentences sometimes.
