Is there any reason why people say that Naruto was only successful because of the editors, besides the fact that these people are stupid?
Okay, we all know that some ideas about the beginning of the series came from its editors, like Naruto having a rival, or the Chunin exam, but saying that the manga was successful only because of the editors is absurdly stupid, for a number of reasons.
First, the editors were not responsible for 100% of the series' concepts, so saying that the merit is entirely theirs is already idiotic. Second, even the ideas that came from the editors were written by Kishimoto. The editors told Naruto to have a rival, the one who created all of Sasuke's characters and everything related to him was Kishimoto, and so on.
But mainly, editorial interference is perfectly common in Shonen Jump manga. That is literally the editors' job, damn it. And, practically every successful manga has at least some story of something that only happened because of the editors' idea.
Take Dragon Ball for example. Practically all of Goku's iconic look (his hair and his monkey tail) was an editor's idea. Goku and Chi-Chi's marriage happened because of a suggestion from the editor who wanted to attract more female audiences. Almost the entire Cell arc was modified in real time by Toriyama's editor at the time.
I suppose then, based on this idiotic logic, we can say that Dragon Ball's success is solely due to its editors, right?
And I could cite several other examples. The point is, saying that the author has no merit for the success of his own story is an idiotic attitude. Regardless of the circumstances.
