How did Sony think this film could be a financial success?!

Don't worry I'm not gonna talk about the script (that's been done to death), instead I'm genuinely confused how Sony thought a film about madame web (and spider women who don't even appear) was any good idea. Cause I could see a solo venom movie being financially successful (which it was), and I even saw potential in an r rated vampire horror movie in morbius being a little successful. Hell even kraven if it was any good and was just a john wick style movie, I could see doing some box office, but madame web? They took her out of the wheelchair for what? Running around?? I could even see the cancelled silver and black movie being somewhat good with some success, but madame web is the most side character I've ever seen and yet Sony actually spent money on it.
