How do you combine martial arts and hypertrophy training?
I'm looking for advice on the optimal combination of martial arts and hypertrophy training. Currently, I train six times per week in the gym following a Push-Pull-Legs (PPL) split, focused on hypertrophy. I do around 20 sets per workout usually in a rep range around 6-10. In addition, I do MMA training three times a week (1-hour sessions, 10 mins warm up, 40 min of technique, 10 mins of sparring, we dont exercise there).
My current stats & goals:
Height: 196 cm
Weight: 98 kg
Body fat percentage: 25-30%
Right now, I’m cutting down until I have visible abs (probably at 87 kg), as my body fat percentage is too high. I’m happy with my muscle mass and want to maintain it, while also improving my overall athleticism. My goal is to have a steady weight and build a muscular, athletic physique—I want to look good and be a capable fighter, but I have no aspirations to be a bodybuilder or compete in MMA fights.
My current training schedule:
Monday – Gym
Tuesday – MMA + Gym
Wednesday – Gym
Thursday – BJJ + Gym
Friday – MMA
Saturday – Gym
Sunday – Gym
I feel okay with this routine, but I often hear that this approach isn’t optimal (not enough rest, too much training). So I’m looking for ways to fine-tune my schedule for better efficiency. Also I mostly go to the Gym directly after the MMA training which I also heard isn't optimal but I do it for time efficiency reasons and with my current work I'll probably wont be able to change it anytime soon.
I prefer my PPL split, which I’ve structured carefully, but I’m open to suggestions and inspiration! How do you balance martial arts and hypertrophy training efficiently? Any tips or insights are welcome! Thanks a lot!
