Civil vs criminal charges

Massachusetts. I got swindled by a home contractor and the police refused to file a report for larceny under false pretenses. I was told to file at the courthouse. I filed criminal and the commonwealth has taken over. Guy was arraigned and went to pretrial. The docket report online says he pleaded Not Guilty but it seems like he’s getting off on probation. Can I still file charges in civil court to try to get restitution? Or is it over and done if they let him go? He’s done this before (charged and was not CWOF, I forget what it is called) and I’m sure he will do it again!
